Project Overview
KPS was appointed by Surrey County Council to carry out essential structural and weatherproofing works to the Grade II listed Old Byfleet Fire Station.
The building, which is approximately 140 years old, had been unused and exposed to the elements for around 40 years. The project required a careful and sensitive approach, restoring the building to a usable condition while respecting its historic character and original construction.
Challenges
The Challenge
Due to the age and significance of the building, the project required close coordination with a number of stakeholders, including trustees, Historic Building Officers, Surrey County Council and Building Control.
The key challenge was to bring the building back into a safe, compliant and usable condition without compromising its heritage value. This required specialist input, careful planning and a considered approach to every stage of the works.

KPS delivered a wide-ranging package of refurbishment and reinstatement works designed to make the building wind and watertight, structurally sound and suitable for future commercial use by the local community.

Installation
Heritage and Stakeholder Coordination
Working on a Grade II listed building required KPS to bring in specialist suppliers and trades who understood the requirements of historic restoration. This included heritage brickwork specialists, lath and plaster experts and Crittall window suppliers.
The approach was shaped by the need to preserve as much of the building’s original character as possible while ensuring it met the practical requirements of a modern commercial space.
Result
The Result
On completion, KPS handed back a much-loved local building that had been brought back to life after decades of disuse. The completed works provided a fully wind and watertight shell, compliant electrics, emergency lighting and an air source heat pump heating system.
At handover, trustees and representatives commented that the project had “brought a much loved building back to life” and created a space that could serve the local community for many years to come.
